An Oak Tree
In association with Couch Penny Ensemble, Artistic Director and Co-Founder Riles August Holiday as The Hypnotist led a 12-performance run of Tim Crouch’s groundbreaking piece An Oak Tree. In this famous piece, one actor(The Hypnotist) has prepared and rehearsed the role, while a new performer joins them every night, completely blind to the experience they’re about to have. They learn their role over the course of the performance every night. Riles performed with Theatre Arcana Ensemble members, Grace Taylor, Alex Albrecht, and Audrey Romero! Thank you so much to Arcana Ensemble members Jono Mammel and Jasmyn Zeigerson for stepping in as rehearsal guest performers, and Drake St. Pierre and Lily Ryan for being on call as emergency guest performers!

New Pages 2026
In 2025, we started taking submissions for new plays by Chicago Playwrights! We received 100+ submissions, and over the course of three months, our selection committee poured over each one. We selected 4 submissions we felt represented the highest level of skill, theatricality, and were the most ready for development. Artistic Director Riles August Holiday and Jasmyn Zeigerson spent the next few months studying the scripts and giving a playwriting consultation to each writer. Over the summer, we gave each script a three-week development process with a team of actors and directors both from the ensemble and the Chicago theatre community. Each Development ended in a public reading hosted by Edgewater’s Solar Intentions!
